This week’s Pender Chronicle is so full of news, it’s spilled over into my blog.

So, in order to keep you up to date, I will share these tidbits:

• Pender County property owners with a history of flood damage can apply through the county Planning and Community Development Department by May 21 for federal aid to help mitigate the cost of elevating and retrofitting homes. Contact the Planning Department at 910-259-1202 for information.

• According to reports, the KFC planned for the lot across from McDonald’s in Burgaw is still in the works, but has been delayed until at least September.

• In a joint effort by Visionaries and St. Matthew Community Action Group, there will be a Teen Summit 1-4 p.m. July 17 at the Burgaw Elementary School Gymnasium. There will be various speakers focusing on topics such as anger management, stress reduction and respect. There will be entertainment and door prizes. Information about the event and how to make donations is available by e-mailing vision.actiongp@yahoo.com.

• Burgaw Elementary also will be hosting the Talent & Fashion Show Explosion, June 12, 6-9 p.m. Contact Calvin R. Newton Jr., 910-540-7626, for information.

• The Discovery Channel has announced that its “Swamp Loggers” show, which is filmed primarily in Pender County, has been rated as No. 1 in non-fiction programming in primetime among the prime demographic of males, aged 18-49. The program, which airs at various times on The Discovery Channel (see http://dsc.discovery.com/tv-schedules/series.html?paid=1.14951.26135.37440.10 for times) follows the hard working crew of Goodson’s All Terrain Logging as they attempt to log in some of the wettest, slimiest sites. All Terrain is operated by Bobby T. Goodson out of Jacksonville, N.C. It was started in 1992, employs up to 19 people and earns between $2.5 and $5 million per year, according to its listing on the Internet.
