Wallace Post 156 bats grow quiet as playoffs approach

Wallace Post 156 dropped four games this week as their bats went quiet for several of the games.

Duplin/Sampson 15, Wallace 6
On Sunday, June 26 Post 156 went on the road to play Duplin Sampson and fell hard 15-6. They were trailing 9-1 after three innings.
Wallace hitters did manage to bang out nine hits, but Post 156’s fielders made six errors.
Hunter Long took the loss for Wallace.
Kyle Williams reached on an error by the Duplin/Sampson right fielder in the third inning and later advanced to third on an error by the third baseman. Williams scored on a sacrifice fly by Hunter Long making the score 9-1.
T.J. Murrell led off the fourth with an infield single to second base and advanced to third base on a two-out single by Dylan Hairr. Both Williams and Hairr scored on a double by Taylor Williams.

Emmitt Herring led off the fifth inning with a double and advanced to third on a single by Austin Sanderson. A walk to Murrell loaded up the bases. Devin Scarborough reached first base after a failed suicide squeeze attempt which got Herring thrown out at the plate for the second out. A single by Eli Lanier plated two to make the score 10-5.
Emmitt Herring hit a solo homerun in the top of the sixth to make the score 10-6.

Garner 5, Wallace 0
In the first game of a doubleheader on Tuesday, June 28, Garner scored five runs in the third inning. They were the only ones of the game as Garner prevailed 5-0 over home team Post 156.
Garner pitching held Wallace to just three hits. Wallace fielders didn’t commit an error.
Jacob Carter took the loss for Post 156.
The top hitters for Wallace were Cody Butschillinger who went 1-for-3; Hunter Long, who went 1-for-2, and Devin Scarborough who went 1-for-2.

Garner 3, Wallace 0
Wallace’s struggles at the bat continued as Post 156 was shut out 3-0 in the second game of the doubleheader.
Garner led 1-0 after the first inning and 2-0 after the second inning. Garner scored its final run of the game in the third inning.
Wallace pitching held Garner to five hits. Wallace also had five hits. Post 156 was strong in the field, committing just one error.
Ray Malone took the loss for Post 156.
Leading hitters for Post 156 were Taylor Williams who went 2-for-2; Dylan Hairr who went 2-for-3, and Cody Butschillinger who went 1-for-1 with two walks.
“We pitched the ball and played pretty good defense tonight, but ran into a great Garner pitching staff that held us scoreless for 14 innings today,” Post 156 Coach Kevin Hager said. “At this point, we are playing some guys in some different roles trying to find our best lineup going into the playoffs.”

Duplin/Sampson 16, Wallace 3
Legion Post 156 hosted Duplin/Sampson in the final game of the regular season, losing 16-3.
Wallace struggled in the field, committing three costly errors.
Post 145 led 3-2 going into the top of the fifth inning. Duplin/Sampson scored two in the top of the fifth to take the lead, and then exploded for 12 runs in the sixth inning.
Duplin/Sampson scored 16 runs on only seven hits.
Cody Butschillinger took the loss for Wallace.
Ray Malone had a one-out walk in the second inning and advanced to second base on a single by Dylan Hairr. A misplayed bunt by Eli Lanier loaded the bases. Taylor Williams drew a one-out walk to tie the score at one apiece. Another walk to Kyle Williams followed by a single by Cody Butschillinger gave Wallace a 3-1 lead after two innings of play.
Wallace’s leading hitters were Cody Butschillinger who went 3-for-4 and Dylan Hairr, who went 1-for-3.
“Our bats have gone quiet the last few games, which isn’t exactly what you’re looking for going into playoff time,” Hager said. “Cody threw a good game until he ran out of gas in the sixth. We issued 10 walks tonight, which isn’t going to get it done in the playoffs.”
