Sox rained out of Fenway game

By Brian Hoffman

The Salem Red Sox will host a doubleheader at Lewis-Gale Field on Tuesday, August 31, to make up for Saturday’s cancellation of “Futures at Fenway” in Boston. The twin-bill, set to begin at 5:30 pm, will feature two seven-inning games between the Salem Red Sox and the Potomac Nationals to begin what will be the final regular season homestand of the season.

Salem pitcher Brock Huntzinger was scheduled to start in the rained out game at Fenway on Sunday.

“I barely slept the night before the game because I was so excited,” Huntzinger said on Monday. “Everyone is a little disappointed the game was rained out but hopefully I’ll have the chance to pitch in Fenway in the future.”

Game Two of the 2010 Futures at Fenway doubleheader featuring the Salem Red Sox and Potomac Nationals was cancelled due to the compromised condition of the field of play after a sudden, heavy downpour during the afternoon and a forecast of additional heavy rain. Game One was called due to rain in the top of the sixth inning with the Jamestown Jammers earning a 7-2 victory over the Lowell Spinners. The umpires made the decision to halt the game due to steady, heavy rain and the forecasted continuation of rain.

The Red Sox encourage fans holding tickets for the July 10, 2010 Futures at Fenway to keep their ticket stubs. Special opportunities for those ticket holders will be provided due to the cancellation of Game Two, and may include discounted tickets and/or concessions for the 2011 Futures at Fenway doubleheader. Fans should watch for further details about the 2011 game.
