Southwest Onslow defeats Richlands
Southwest Onslow (2-1) beat Richlands (0-3) Friday in what was described by the coaches as a hard-fought battle. The Stallions have now secured 24 consecutive wins over the Wildcats, but only managed to slip past by four points last week, winning 39-35.
By halftime, the score was 32-20 with Southwest leading. The players on the field told a slightly different story. Although 12 points ahead, the Stallions had little breathing room, and a sharp throwing game was causing Southwest headaches on the sidelines.
“How do they keep passing on us,” one coach exclaimed.
On paper, it even seemed Richlands held their own. QB Tank Norman had a total of 153 yards to his passing game, with 11 out of 18 passing attempts completed. Southwest’s Hetterscheidt passed for 15 yards.
Norman ended with 121 yards rushing and three touchdowns and 153 yard passing with two touchdown passes. Quentin Fenn added 109 yards and on just nine carries for Richlands.
Richlands was also penalized less (3 for 25 yards, vs 12 for 80 yards) and got more first downs. The Wildcats persisted, and were awarded with a 35-32 lead with 10 minutes left in the fourth quarter.
Southwest defensive back Shak Pershey gave brought hope back to his team when he brought a kickoff to the endzone. Unfortunately, touchdown was no good, due to a penalty. However the spectacular return still stood, as the penalty occurred at the Richlands 16 yard line.
Soon after, the Stallion’s Bryan Rosado scored on a 10-yard with the extra point giving Southwest a 39-35 lead.
On the Southwest side, Rosado added 90 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries while running back Cortez Vernon ended with 126 yards and a touchdown with 12 carries.
Richlands’ last three losses come at a combined 13 points, and will host Jacksonville next week.
