Sheriff fires deputy arrested for hiring prostitute
A Pender County sheriff’s captain has been “dismissed” from his job after an internal investigation that followed his arrest in Wilmington for hiring a prostitute.
Patrol Capt. Charles Mark Sloan, 46, had been on unpaid suspension after being arrested Tuesday night, June 14 for soliciting prostitution and crimes against nature. Police reported Sloan had been pulled over in the 1900 block of Physicians Drive in

Sloan was released from the New Hanover County jail Wednesday morning after meeting a $5,000 unsecured bond and was put on suspension by Sheriff Carson Smith. The department then started an investigation into the matter, which ended June 16 with Sloan’s dismissal, according to department officials. Those officials stopped short of saying Sloan had been “fired.”
Sloan has been in law enforcement for more than 20 years and joined the Pender sheriff’s office in 2002. He oversaw 24 deputies in the patrol division who answer service calls and perform other duties.
