Fans from other regions of North Carolina might disagree, but Friday’s football game between the Wallace-Rose Hill Bulldogs and the East Duplin Panthers could very well have been the most exciting, hard-played high school game in the Tarheel State.

<img src="http://capefearnewspapers.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/Traven-McKinzie-300x167.jpg" alt=" Bulldog running back Traveon McKinzie searches for running room during a first half sweep against East Duplin. (Photo by Michael Staton)

Both teams were highly ranked in their respective divisions in the Associated Press rankings, the Bulldogs No. 1 in 1-A and the Panthers No. 2 in 2-A.
Parking was at a premium at Legion Stadium in Wallace as the Panthers brought a strong contingent down from Beulaville, just as the Bulldogs did last year when they prevailed at East Duplin 16-10 on the way to their second straight state championship.
Again, the score was close this year with the Bulldogs winning on their own turf 13-10.
Traymon Evans, a transfer from Harrells Christian Academy where he had some incredible rushing numbers in games last year, was the top rusher for the Bulldogs, gaining 139 tough yards.
Evans scored the game’s first touchdown, a three-yard run that capped a short drive following a fumble recovery on the opening kickoff. The point-after kick was blocked, leaving the Bulldogs with a 6-0 lead with the game barely underway.
Good blocking by the offensive line and hard running by East Duplin’s Dre Scarbrough resulted in a two-yard touchdown later in the first quarter. After the successful point-after kick, the Panthers led 7-6.
The Panthers went into the locker room at halftime leading 10-7 after a 34-yard field goal by Zachary Parker.
The Bulldogs tried a field goal in the last seconds of the first half. The ball was on target, but it fell short.
Wallace-Rose Hill regained the lead in the third quarter on a three-yard run by Traveon McKinzie. But rest of the third quarter and all of the fourth quarter remained for the East Duplin offense to put more points on the scoreboard.
The Panthers threatened to score in the fourth quarter. They drove inside the Bulldogs’ 20-yard line, but an interception by Malcolm Chasten inside the five-yard line killed the drive.
East Duplin had one last chance to score or tie the game when the Panthers got the ball back on a punt with under a minute left. But the Bulldogs forced a fumble which they recovered.
East Duplin coach Battle Holley lamented the lost opportunities with drives not finished. Another East Duplin coach shook his head over ill-timed penalties.
Holley was a quarterback for Wallace-Rose Hill approximately 20 years ago. His father, Jack Holley, was a longtime coach at Wallace-Rose Hill and built the Bulldogs into one of the better 1-A teams in the state. The younger Holley also had a coaching stint at Wallace-Rose Hill.
Coach Joey Price of Wallace-Rose Hill said he told the Bulldogs at halftime to just keep fighting.
The Bulldogs are 3-1 on the season. They travel to Lakewood for a Friday Tri-County 1-A Conference game.
The Panthers also are 3-1. They host South Lenoir Friday evening in an East Central 2-A Conference game.

The Pirates didn’t get to touch the ball much in the second half of Friday’s home game. When a team doesn’t have its offense on the field, it can’t score. That was the case for Topsail as the Pirates fell to Ashley 24-14 for its first loss of the still-young season.
With Tom Eanes back in town with his Screaming Eagles, not the Pender Patriots, the Pirates got to once again experience an Eanes-engineered offense.

<img src="http://capefearnewspapers.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/Topsail-runner-300x188.jpg" alt="Austin Schoenleber drives for yardage as two Ashley defenders try to bring him down. (Photo courtesy of Teresa Bullock)

During the jamboree at Legion Stadium in Wilmington, Ashley’s offense sputtered, but it looked proficient Friday night in Hampstead.
The Screaming Eagles amassed 268 rushing yards. The offense played ball control in the second half, especially the fourth quarter when it kept the ball for nearly nine minutes. At the end of that drive, Justin Wain kicked a 29-yard field goal to increase Ashley’s lead to 24-6. A comeback for the Pirates looked unlikely.
Topsail coach Bryan Davis inserted freshman quarterback Austin Schoenleber in the fourth quarter in an effort to generate some offense. It worked to a point.
Schoenleber connected with Hunter Jacobs for a 71-yard completion that put them in touchdown range. Devin Williams ran the ball in from three yards out to cut the Screaming Eagles’ lead to 24-12. A successful two-point conversion made the score 24-14.
Davis tried an onside kick which was successful. The Pirates were still alive. But a Schoenleber pass was intercepted.
The Pirates’ Will Thomas, the sparkplug that makes Topsail’s offense dangerous, was a nonfactor in the game. Thomas managed just 37 yards rushing on 10 carries. He caught two passes for 26 yards.
At one time the Pirates led 6-0 before the Screaming Eagles went up 7-6 early in the second quarter. For rest of the game the Screaming Eagles did all the scoring until Williams scored from three yards out on the back end of the fourth quarter.
The Pirates travel to Northside in Onslow County Friday for a league game. Northside is undefeated with wins over White Oak, West Crave, Jacksonville and Fike.
With the loss, Topsail is now 2-1 on the season.

Wildcats quarterback Tank Norman was out due to a concussion received last week against Southwest, and was replaced by sophomore Ethan Horne. Patrick Childress of Jacksonville was replaced by three players, after injuring his leg against Northside.

Tough defending won the Wildcats 24 unanswered points, refusing Jacksonville any opportunities to score.

Horne did what his opponents on Jacksonville couldn’t, completing four passes for 71 yards and rushing for 48. After a scoreless first quarter, McQueen got a five yard touchdown from a hand off, and Jerry Walker scored on a 40 yard pass after which Horne ran it in for a conversion.

The Wildcats owned the third quarter as well. Trey Smith completed a 33 yard field goal and Horne scored on a six yard run. Smith kicked for the field goal, bringing the score to 24 for Richlands.

The fourth was without score, with the Wildcats defense continuing to chew through the Cardinals’ offense.

Coach Mike Natoli was glad to finally get a win in the 2011 season. After three narrow losses, the Wildcats are 1-3.

“Well I feel great for these kids, they really deserved it. We fought really hard these past few weeks and we were one play away in all three games, and that’s high school football, you could be 3-0 or 0-3,” he said. “We’ve fought so much adversity this year and for them to perform like they did tonight it’s really exciting”

Natoli said the key to Friday’s victory was understanding the opponent, and exploiting any weakness.

“Their starting quarterback was out, and Patrick Childress is a great player and a great quarterback. We knew he was out, and our game plan revolved around that,” he said.

“We blitzed almost every single snap, we put our best corner on their best receiver, and we felt that if we could put a little pressure on their young quarterbacks we could get them riled a little bit.”

It was evident that Jacksonville was struggling offensively by the second quarter. The Cardinals’ quarterbacks often ended up well behind the line of scrimmage on the fourth down. With a little more than two minutes in the third quarter, a bad snap on the JHS side before a punt led to Richlands starting within 20 yards or so of the Cardinals’ end zone.

“The defensive coaches did great job this week of putting together a game plan, and the kids did a great job executing it,” Natoli said.

Richlands faces Clinton in conference play next week, and the coach said the Wildcats will continue keep their strategy consistent.

“Just like we always do, we’ll break down their film, watch it and put together a game plan Monday, we’ll get after it Tuesday and Wednesday, polish it up Thursday and play on Friday, just like every week.”

It was a long Friday night for a very good football team in the Wallace-Rose Hill Bulldogs. They hosted 4-A powerhouse New Hanover and lost 48-7. The loss snapped the longest win streak in the state – 30 games.
The Bulldogs could have scheduled an easier opponent, but that’s not the way they conduct business. This 1-A school wants to go up against the best, even if it’s a 4-A school.

<img src="http://capefearnewspapers.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/Bulldog1-300x158.jpg" alt="A New Hanover running back slips past Wallace-Rose Hill linebacker Andrew Maynor during first half action. (Photo by Michael Staton)

They didn’t play bad…it’s just that the Wildcats were bigger and faster.
The Bulldogs kept the score close in the first half. New Hanover scored just four minutes into the game to lead 7-0. But the Bulldogs answered quickly, smashing through the Wildcats’ defensive line and chewing big yardage. It looked like it would be a high scoring game for both teams as Traymon Evans crossed the goal line after a 16-yard run to tie the game. But the Bulldogs would not score again.
The Wildcats led 14-7 late in the first half but then scored again before halftime to go into the visitor’s locker room with a 21-7 lead.
New Hanover outscored Wallace-Rose Hill 27-0 in the second half.
The Bulldogs struggled with the Wildcats’ passing attack. New Hanover amassed 345 aerial yards. Four passes went for touchdowns.
Fans of both teams as well as folks who love high school football had been waiting for this match-up between the Bulldogs, two-time defending 1-A state champion, and the Wildcats who could go far in the 4-A playoffs.
The week before New Hanover had their pride bashed, losing 49-28 to Scotland.
New Hanover coach Kevin Motsinger had his team ready to play. He described the Wallace-Rose Hill football program as the best in the region.
Strategy wise, it was Wildcat quarterback Bates Taylor’s passing arm against the Bulldogs’ running backs. Taylor found Trevon Brown eight times for 173 yards while Raheim Hewitt caught two touchdown passes.
Wallace-Rose Hill coach Joey Price said his secondary didn’t play a substandard game. Their tall receivers made big catches when they needed to, Price said.
For the Bulldogs, Evans had 18 carries for 111 yards.
This Friday, Wallace-Rose Hill hosts 2-A East Duplin, undefeated so far this season.

The Pender Patriots under first-year coach Tony Hudson won their first game of the season on Friday night, defeating Whiteville 34-21.
The win was a home game, except the Patriots played this “home” game on the home field of the Trask Titans, who were on the road playing Ashley.
The Patriots were forced to make the trip to Rocky Point because someone drove onto the Patriot football field after the hurricane and did wheelies.

<img src="http://capefearnewspapers.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/Patriots1-300x155.jpg" alt=" The Patriots’ offense looked good in scoring five touchdowns Friday night against Whiteville. (Photo by Michael Staton)

The maintenance crew tried to fix the damage, but it proved too substantial. Since the Titans were on the road, the Trask administrative staff let the Patriots use the Titan field.
Hudson had been an assistant coach under Titan head coach Glenn Sellers.
The Patriots looked good in their first win of the young season. At one time in the second half they led 34-14 over the Wolfpack.
Hudson said his team was angry over not being able to play their home game on their home field and took it out on the Wolfpack.
It was a much-needed win for the Patriots, who lost to the Topsail Pirates 37-8 a week ago.
Tremain Simpson and Tryon Smith each scored two touchdowns for Pender while Talib Smith recorded the Patriots’ final score.
Hudson praised the play of his offensive line. He said the Patriots’ offense played much better, only fumbling once.
The Patriot coach also said special teams played much better.
The two teams were tied 7-7 at the end of the first quarter. The Patriots went into the locker room leading 20-14. Neither team scored in the third quarter. In the final quarter, the Patriots outscored the Wolfpack 14-7.
The Patriots, who are 1-2 on the young season, are off Friday. They visit Hobbton Sept. 16 for their first Tri-County Conference game.

The Panthers offense played well enough, taking 27 points from James Kenan, but a nearly impenetrable defense was able to keep points off the board.

“You won, you guys should be happy. But we can’t get greedy, we’ve got to take what we can get, big or small,” said EDHS head coach Battle Holley to his team after the game, as he was holding his young daughter.

The Panthers took advantage of what opportunities came their way to get points on the board. Zack Parker got things rolling with a 29 yard field goal, and three following kicks were successful. Dre Scarborough scored on a four yard run in the second quarter followed by a massive 82 touchdown by John Moore from QB Derrick Conter.

James Kenan’s only points came from Bautista, on a 28 yard field goal. The Panthers wrapped up the fourth with a 10 yard pass to Moore, bringing the Panthers’ score to 27. Holley said that although the team played well, offense still shows room for improvement.

“I thought our defense played really well. Offense was a little flat and I’ll take the blame on that. But we came away with a win, and that’s what we wanted,” he said.

Even the parking lot at East Duplin seemed to be standing-room only. Such is the nature of cross-county rivalries such as with the Panthers and Tigers.

“When you play, it doesn’t matter what time of year it is, what the records are, when they play they’re going to play hard and they’ve got a great coaching staff, it was just a hard-fought game,” Holley said.

East Duplin is now preparing to face off against another rival next week. Although Wallace Rose-Hill lost to New Hanover 48-7, Holley is careful not to underestimate the Bulldogs, which recently set huge winning-streak records.

“Well, it’s another football game, hopefully we’ll have a win. They’re another rival team, you know, and neither team will have to motivate their players too hard. They’ll be ready to go,” he said. The coach was pleased with his players that stayed on the field throughout the game against the Tigers.

“We had some guys playing on both sides of the ball, and never came off the field and they didn’t get tired. We had some adversity, the defense had to stay on the field a long time and they bailed us out and gave us a short time to get some points,” he said, adding that cutting down on penalties (which lost the Panthers 90 yards) was a priority.

Earlier in the season, the coach also spoke of increasing what he described as “depth” on the team.

“We’ve improved a little bit, but we’ve still got a little ways to go,” he said.

The Trask win didn’t reflect the huge offensive numbers the Pirates amassed. This time, though, the Pirates eliminated their turnovers, penalties and mental mistakes.
Topsail coach Bryan Davis was pleased with the play of both his offense and defense. He said both units were able to control the line of scrimmage.
Starting running backs Rodney James and Blake Terwilliger were on the sidelines with knee and concussion injuries, but the offense hardly missed a beat.
Will Thomas had two touchdowns even with a banged-up leg. Even better, Devin Williams recorded three running touchdowns.
A Thomas touchdown early in the second quarter put the Pirates in front 14-0. The Pirates first touchdown came after a fumble recovery.
That 14-point lead kept growing and the Patriots’ vaunted option attack fizzled as the Pirates’ swarming defense wouldn’t let Pender runners make any big plays.
Pender coach Tony Hudson said the Patriots will have to regroup and do the hard work necessary to improve.

Topsail High School Freshman quarterback Austin Schoenleber threw the winning touchdown Friday night as the visiting Pirates upended the Trask Titans 9-7 in an error-filled game.

<img src="http://capefearnewspapers.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/kick-1024x768.jpg" alt="The field goal try was good, giving the Pirates a 3-0 halftime lead. (Photos by Deb Norton)

Pirate Coach Bryan Davis inserted Schoenleber in the third quarter to try to spark a comeback.
Topsail trailed 7-3 in the third when Schoenleber found receiver Will Thomas open along the left side of the end zone.
The freshman tossed a high-arching pass that Thomas caught for the go-ahead 17-yard touchdown.
The successful TD pass came after Schoenleber led the Pirates to inside the Trask 20-yard line using a series of running plays.
Thomas is a senior and the go-to guy for Davis. Last year Thomas was the starting quarterback. This year he sometimes is a receiver and sometimes a running back. The goal is to get him the ball so he can make something positive happen.
Thomas suggested the fade route that resulted in the winning touchdown, according to Davis. The fade route is nearly impossible to cover in a one-on-one situation, and equally difficult to intercept.
Schoenleber never threw another pass. It rained in the fourth quarter, so Davis kept the ball on the ground. Schoenleber handled the option offense with poise in the slippery conditions.
Even with scrimmages to iron out the kinks, first games are historically filled with penalty flags and turnovers – and this was no exception.
Topsail should have put more points on the scoreboard. The Pirates fumbled three times inside the Titans’ 10-yard line. A punt return for a touchdown was nullified by a penalty. Officials flagged Topsail 10 times for more than 90 yards.
“Any win is a good win holds true,” Davis said. “We had more than 300 yards of offense and 20 first downs to four for Trask. It was just one of those games. There were lots of penalties and we turned the ball over three times inside the Trask 10-yard line.”
For a while, it appeared the Titans might escape with a win. They only trailed 3-0 at halftime, and took the lead 7-3 in the third quarter when quarterback Josh Wright escaped tacklers for a 27-yard touchdown.
Later in the third quarter, the Pirates recovered a punt at their 45-yard and Schoenleber drove them 55 yards for the winning touchdown.
The Pirates will entertain Pender Friday night. The Patriots are looking for their first win as they fell 14-8 to North Brunswick last week.
